Industry backs Woodwise Scheme to reduce accidents on woodworking machinery

Bristol based Didac Limited, the specialist training provider for the woodworking sector, has launched Woodwise, a training and assessment initiative whose objective is to reduce the number of accidents occurring on woodworking machines. The scheme has received strong backing from leading industry players.

Woodwise is a low-cost, work-based certification scheme, accredited by City & Guilds, to improve the competence of operators of woodworking machinery. Operators can become certified on just one machine, or on a selection of machines, depending on their own needs and those of their employer.

Trainee

Woodwise is a socially inclusive programme that is available to any woodworking machinist, whether new to the industry, or with many years of experience - there are no age limits or experience thresholds. Woodworking machine operators can build up Woodwise credits, which can then be counted towards further qualifications such as the NVQ Level 2 in Machine Woodworking.

Jon Gibson, Woodwise Scheme Co-ordinator says "Woodwise is destined to become a key benchmark for the woodworking industry by which a machine operator’s competence can be assessed. This will help employers comply with health and safety legislation and reduce the number of accidents on woodworking machines".

Gibson continues "the assessment involves a web-based theory test, followed by a work-based practical assessment - just like a driving test. Successful candidates will receive The Safe Use of Woodworking Machinery Certificate of Competence listing the machines on which they have achieved the minimum level of competence.

He added "we are currently processing applications from woodworking machinery suppliers, professional trainers, furniture manufacturers and joinery companies who will become Woodwise Assessment Centres and Affiliates with the competence to deliver the training and assessment modules."
